Wapiyapi

Services: Activities and Recreation, Patient Support
Founded: 1998

Wapiyapi is a Colorado based nonprofit organization that offers a community of hope and support to families affected by childhood cancer. Wapiyapi hosts free summer camps and year-round family retreats to provide a respite for children with cancer and their families.

Wapiyapi- A Lakota Sioux word meaning health and healing

For hundreds of families facing childhood cancer, it also means hope, support and even fun.

Since 1998, Wapiyapi has supported families facing childhood cancer with a variety of empowering programs including free summer camps and family retreats. The Colorado-based nonprofit has served more than 1,500 children and their families in a safe, nurturing environment.

Founded by University of Colorado medical students, Wapiyapi offers year-round support at no cost to families. More than 300 volunteers- half of them in the medical field or pursuing medical education- give their time and commitment to ensure Wapiyapi programs run smoothly.

Healing doesn’t always happen in the hospital. At Camp Wapiyapi, a one-week camp for children facing cancer, patients and their siblings find all the activities of a typical camp experience, from outdoor games and talent shows to arts and crafts. They enjoy the camaraderie of other campers who understand what they’re going through, and find supportive adults who care about their emotional and physical well-being.

Wapiyapi isn’t just for kids. Young adult retreats are for teens ages 15 through 18 facing the challenges of cancer. During a fun weekend getaway, teens find friendship, understanding and support with others who share their experience.

Wapiyapi’s family retreats are for every age. Families facing childhood cancer come together during this weekend getaway to find respite, encouragement and empowerment.

Wapiyapi is committed to serving families facing childhood cancer. The journey isn’t easy, but it’s good to know that Wapiyapi is there along the way.
